Engineers from IBM are trying to build artificial neuron
Scientists have created artificial neurons and stimulate them randomly, it works about as well as neural circuits in the human brain. Computers are often compared with artificial brain, now researchers from IBM give a new meaning to this comparison, they managed to create an artificial neuron. Research center technology giant Zurich has created 500 of these neurons for simulation of signal transmission that is similar to the one that is transmitted into the human brain. As in other similar studies, the real challenge is to miniaturize the elements of the system, and she also still continued to work. This is the reason for the achievements of IBM, a truly remarkable achievement. The neurons were constructed from well known materials and can only be reduced to a few nanometers, while it does not interfere with their work.
Organic neurons use the membrane as the signal receivers, which absorb a certain amount of energy. In version IBM, this role is performed by the alloy Germany — antimony — telluria, as it is a common ingredient of optical disks.
If you heat the material enough, it changes phase from amorphous to fully crystalline insulator of the conductor. In other words, the signal flows when the membrane receives enough power to phase change has occurred, after which everything returns back to its amorphous state.
Scientists, however, had to solve another problem – they would like to give the artificial neuron is another feature than its organic counterpart – randomness. This is, to put it simply, means a dose of randomness in the activation of neurons.
IBM achieves this using the above membrane – they never returned in the same condition that leads to spontaneous and accidental activation of groups of neurons – thus connecting the goals that can be achieved if the neurons excited by the signal is completely predictable.
Using this technology, scientists can create computers that will work on the principle of organic brains. As they themselves note, however – the detail of such an artificial brain is not quite an easy task – but even more difficult to write a program for such a system.
