You can produce oxygen from lunar dust
Previously, scientists believed that the dust on the Lunar surface should be at least half a meter thick, but when the Americans saw the moon and saw what was on the surface, they realized that the moon is not billions of years old, that it is young and at a young age, since the dust on its surface is not much up to 10 cm, in some places even less. Only in the hollows and craters it accumulated a little more than the expected level.

This is probably necessary in the event that you need to dig on the moon for a long time! Scientists first created regolith in the laboratory ( something similar to lunar dust), and then extracted oxygen from this regolith. The process of splitting lunar dust into components was even given a name-ROXY (Regolith to OXYgen and Metals Conversion). It is difficult to call such an event anything other than a space revolution.
This discovery was made by scientists in the framework of the project "Future development of the moon". Both German minds and American and even Spanish comrades worked on the topic and contributed something to the project and made it successful..
This discovery did not immediately work out, before two whole years of scientists experimented and at some stage the experiment still gave a successful exhaust and from the usual regolith scientists were able to get real oxygen.
Now, with a hundred percent guarantee, we can say that you can make something useful for astronauts from lunar dust. Oxygen as a good oxidizer is always needed and in space it is also needed, especially since it needs a lot, and it is not so easy to carry it.
Now it is easier to throw an oxygen production plant on the moon once and then not think about how to deliver oxygen there.
Long life on the moon is now one additional parameter managed to extend indefinitely, as long as the moon does not run out of dust.

Apparently, cooperation will not stop at the ROXY process in the future and we should expect at least an installation for extracting water from craters or from the depth of the lunar surface. If you can also get water on the moon, then colonizing it will not be such a problem as it was before.
ROXY is quite possible to implement on a small industrial installation, in which, as in an ordinary stove, you throw moon dust with a shovel and through an imaginary pipe, not CO2, but pure oxygen flies out. To get oxygen on the moon, it does not need anything other than a conventional reactor.
With oxygen in abundance, scientists will be able to use it to melt the lunar soil and get metals and something else, even sinter into bricks and then build whole houses on the moon. There is even a bold assumption that regolith can be used to produce rocket fuel under lunar conditions.
This is a miracle created by EU and US scientists in the Commonwealth...
